A guiding centre direct implicit scheme for magnetized plasma simulations

چکیده

A new implicit fully electromagnetic particle in cell method is presented in which the full ion dynamic and all the electron guiding centre drifts of a magnetized collisionless plasma are retained. This code retains the inertial effects on the electrons. It must be used for time steps larger or so than an electron cyclotron period, it is only valid for an electron plasma beta be < 1. Therefore, it is efficient only with strongly magnetized electrons. On the opposite, the constraint on the ions bi < mi=me (where mi=me is the ion to electron mass ratio) is very weak. This method allows for the simulation of an ionbeam instability (triggering electrostatic ion cyclotron waves and filamentation of the plasma), the propagation of MHD waves, and ion-temperature anisotropies (mirror and/or cyclotron waves), at a relatively low cost. This method could become a useful tool for the modelization of space plasmas, quite complementary with other methods such as HallMHD, hybrid codes, or other implicit particle codes. 2007 Elsevier Inc. Guiding of an electromagnetic pulse in a plasma immersed in combined wiggler and axial magnetic fields

We present a new plasma-based method of guiding an electromagnetic pulse. The scheme consists of an inhomogeneous magnetic field and a uniform density plasma, in contrast to existing schemes that rely on transverse plasma density gradients but need not be magnetized. The refractive index of a magnetized plasma depends on the strength and direction of the magnetic field as well as the plasma den...

Implementation of a Semi-Implicit Orbit-Averaged Gyrokinetic Particle Code

A semi-implicit orbit-averaged time-integration algorithm has been successfully implemented in a gyrokinetic particle simulation code for the study of self-consistent phenomena in a strongly magnetized plasma. The semi-implicit aspect of the integration scheme relaxes the timestep constraints required to insure numerical stability. The orbit averaging is useful in reducing statistical noise and...

Particle-in-cell modeling of relativistic laser-plasma interaction with the adjustable-damping, direct implicit method

Implicit particle-in-cell codes offer advantages over their explicit counterparts in that they suffer weaker stability constraints on the need to resolve the higher frequency modes of the system. This feature may prove particularly valuable for modeling the interaction of high-intensity laser pulses with overcritical plasmas, in the case where the electrostatic modes in the denser regions are o...

A New Implicit Dissipation Term for Solving 3D Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids by GMRES+LU-SGS Scheme

Due to improvements in computational resources, interest has recently increased in using implicit scheme for solving flow equations on 3D unstructured grids. However, most of the implicit schemes produce greater numerical diffusion error than their corresponding explicit schemes. This stems from the fact that in linearizing implicit fluxes, it is conventional to replace the Jacobian matrix in t...

High-Order Semi-Implicit Schemes for Unsteady Compressible Flow Simulations

Direct numerical simulation of stability and transition of compressible boundary layers requires high-orderaccurate and computationally efŽ cient numerical methods to resolve a wide range of timeand length scales associated with wave Ž elds in the boundary layers. Explicit methods have been used mainly in such simulations to advance the compressible Navier–Stokes equations in time. However, the...
